4 Things That You Shouldn't Do When Hiring Professional Movers

Posted on: 25 February 2015

If you're like many people, the idea of moving can seem like a big deal. A lot of families don't like to move any more often than they have to, and you might not be accustomed to hiring movers or going through the moving process. Luckily, hiring a good moving company can make things a whole lot easier. Just make sure that you don't do these four things, and you're sure to find that the process will go a lot more smoothly.

1. Wait Until the Last Minute

It's true that you might not have exact move-out or move-in dates until the last minute, but it's best to plan as far ahead as possible. Many moving companies stay busy, so you might have trouble finding a moving company that will be able to help you if you wait until a couple of days before your move.

2. Do it on the Weekend

Although the weekend might seem like the best time to make your move, it's best to do it during the week if possible. Many moving companies are swamped on the weekends, so it could be tough for you to find a company that has an opening. Plus, many moving companies charge higher rates to help people move on weekends or holidays.

3. Supply Your Own Boxes

Most moving companies prefer that you don't use your own moving boxes when packing up your belongings. This is the case for a few reasons. First of all, the company is responsible for your belongings while they are being transported, so they want to make sure that your stuff is being put in a strong box that won't be at a high risk of damage. Secondly, you might have boxes in different shapes and sizes, which can make it much more difficult for your movers to pack things efficiently in their truck. Instead, use the moving boxes and packing materials that are supplied by the company.

4. Wait Until They Get There to Get Started

Obviously, the point of hiring a moving company is so that you have help with the moving process. However, you shouldn't wait until the movers get there to organize your belongings or go through things that you're going to throw away. This can make the movers very frustrated and can result in higher labor charges. Instead, do all of your organizing, cleaning and purging before the movers get there so that the job can be done quickly and efficiently.

Even if this is your first time hiring professional movers, following these four tips should make it a breeze to do it the right way.
